Islanders are being asked to identify what makes Jersey unique by taking objects and momentos to Jersey War Tunnels on Saturday 16 October as subjects to draw. From 10am to 4pm the doors to Jersey War Tunnels will be open to budding artists as part of a national campaign to encourage people to draw. The Big Draw is taking place in thousands of locations around the UK throughout October. It has been organised by the Campaign for Drawing, part of the Guild of St George Charity, in commemoration of its founder John Ruskin. Mr Ruskin, a Victorian art critic and social reformer, drew every day of his life and believed that when we draw things we see them more clearly and care for them more.
"The focus of all the Big Draw events across the UK is to highlight the potential of drawing," said Jo Falla, co-ordinator of the Big Draw at Jersey War Tunnels. "It helps people to remember and understand what they see, it's fun and inspiring and a great way of learning. I've heard drawing described as "dancing on paper" and that's such a lovely way to put it. If you're really involved, that is what it has the potential to become."
Islanders of all ages are being asked to take part in this fun event, which is designed to connect generations, cultures and disciplines. Participants will be asked to consider how Jersey inspires them by bringing items which they can draw and which conjure up their emotions about "home".
Children are actively encouraged to join in, with paper, paint and drawing materials being provided by Jersey War Tunnels. All participating children will be given a Big Draw certificate and will be able to take home their palette, paint brushes and the work they create.
The main focus of the day will be a large 8ft x 5ft Island canvas upon which participants will be invited to draw or paint where their house is on the Island, with the names of those involved being added to a Big Draw record displayed next to the finished mounted canvas.
Entry to the activities will be free, although if people want to visit the War Tunnels' Captive Island exhibition normal entry charges will apply.
