06- May -2004 Jersey War Tunnels to open for free on Liberation Day
Jersey War Tunnels will offer free admission on Liberation Day to mark this important war time anniversary. It will also host a special dinner for over 100 Occupation veterans that evening.

The site will be open on the day between 09.30-14.00, with last entry to the main exhibition at 12.30. It will then close for a few hours to prepare for the evening event.

General Manager of Jersey War Tunnels, Paul Simmonds, commented:

"Following the success of last year's free opening we have once again decided to commemorate this special day with the same gesture. It is part of our educational programme to encourage continued interest in the Occupation period for visitors and islanders alike."

"As demand is expected to be high, this year several roads around our site will be temporarily made one way so as to allow for more visitor parking. I hope this will not cause undue disruption to residents of the area and if there are any concerns I would ask them to contact me."

Le Charrieres Malorey will be closed to southbound traffic from its junction with the southern section of Le Chemin des Montaines between 09.30-14.00. Visitors to Jersey War Tunnels will be able to use the empty side of the road to park in should its car park reach capacity.

In order to facilitate traffic flow, diversion signs will also be placed to route cars around towards Le Mont de Rocher. For this reason this road will be closed to traffic travelling up the hill during these hours.

Jersey War Tunnels has hosted a dinner for Occupation veterans for a number of years. This event will be particularly important as the attraction seeks to gain first hand accounts of the Occupation to use for many future projects.

Paul Simmonds added:

"Later this month we will be unveiling our new temporary exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day. This major undertaking has been entirely researched in house by our Collections Manager, Chris Addy, by gaining many first hand accounts from islanders present during the period. We aim to gain the same level of personal accounts for next year's exhibition to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Liberation. These important historical accounts will help to ensure that this period of our island's history is preserved."
