03- Oct -2005 Highlands Students learn about the business of tourism
Students from Highlands will learn about Jersey’s second most successful industry this week when they visit Jersey War Tunnels.

The 16-18 year old students are all studying the BTEC Diploma in Business. The course has one externally examined module, for which they must investigate a local business. The students will learn the key business goals of Jersey War Tunnels, its main activities and how they help it to achieve those goals. The students will also learn about Jersey War Tunnels’ management structure, the company’s strengths and weaknesses and its ambitions for the future.

In addition to speaking to the students, Chief Executive of Jersey War Tunnels, Paul Simmonds will give them a tour of the site, describing its resources and how these are effectively utilised.

Jersey War Tunnels has remained a popular attraction for almost 60 years, as well as being a site of heritage conservation and interpretation. Since 2001 over £3 million has been invested by owners Daisy Hill Real Estates, which has transformed the former German Underground Hospital into a multi award winning attraction which includes the Captive Island Exhibition, Shop, Café, Visitor Centre and free public areas the Research Centre, Garden of Reflection and War Trail. According to Jersey Tourism statistics more than one in three tourists visit Jersey War Tunnels during their holiday.

Paul Simmonds commented:

“We seek to maintain parity with the high standards set by the Museums Association. One of its main principles is providing accessibility, upheld by us through the offering of our time and resources to educational establishments Island-wide, whether they are studying history, tourism or business. I am particularly delighted that the group are taking an interest in the tourism industry as it has been a successful part of Jersey’s past, it is an integral part of our present and it will be a vital part of our Island’s future. I hope that the students are left with an understanding that the tourism industry in Jersey is very much still alive and is an exciting and diverse career path for students to follow.”
