10- Nov -2005 Jersey increases winter tourism
Jersey is proving increasingly popular for autumn, winter and spring short breaks according to one of its most popular attractions.

Jersey War Tunnels, which is visited by more than one in three of the Island’s tourists every year, has noticed a distinct increase in visitor revenue between October and May over the past two years as it has extended its traditional season.

Paul Simmonds, Chief Executive of Jersey War Tunnels, commented:

“Jersey as a location offers a fascinating combination of mainland comforts interspersed with continental flair and ambience. Now within our second year of offering an extended season from February-December our research indicates a distinct change in visitor movement with increased numbers choosing to holiday in Jersey outside the summer months. To locals the appeal is obvious, a dramatic change of scenery as autumn takes hold is a joy to behold with the crispness of the temperature making it a perfect time to enjoy the Island’s beautiful coastal walks.”

Jersey War Tunnels is a unique site of historical interest offering an accurate account of the German Occupation of Jersey during the Second World War. The structure is rare amongst European museums and attractions – a piece of living history where visitors walk along tunnels which are now a permanent memorial to the many slave and forced workers who lost their lives during their construction.

Mr Simmonds added:

“Whilst the attraction of our beaches throughout the summer months cannot be disputed, as the nights draw in a breadth of other facets come to life to captivate the visitor. Our wealth of unique history, flora and fauna, excellent hotels, fine cuisine and quality attractions will help to secure Jersey as a year round holiday destination.”
