04- May -2006 Jersey War Tunnels toasts Liberation and reconciliation
Jersey War Tunnels will mark the anniversary of the island’s Liberation Day with a champagne breakfast for 200 invited guests.

The Liberation of Jersey was announced at 07:14 am on 9th May 1945. Jersey War Tunnels, a site of historical conservation and interpretation, will continue the tradition of commemorating this very special day in our Island’s history commencing at that time. This free event is likely to be attended by both veterans of Jersey’s Occupation and dignitaries.

Chief Executive of Jersey War Tunnels, Paul Simmonds, commented:

“It’s 61 years since the Liberation of Jersey, but it is imperative that we continue to remember what the Occupation meant for islanders, whilst also thinking about how that experience links us to other communities living, or who have lived, under occupation. I think Liberation Day is increasingly also a time when we think about reconciliation and the importance of Jersey’s continued links with towns such as Bad Wurzach in Germany – indeed the mayor of that town was a guest at last year’s breakfast.”

He added:

“As the years pass it is encouraging to note that the reconciliation process is being actively endorsed, particularly within the educational initiatives of new generations. For an initial limited period, we plan to display a new range within our shop entitled Reconciliation. There will be a constantly evolving array of bespoke design led items. With every purchase within this range Jersey War Tunnels will make a donation to charitable organisations who work tirelessly to make reconciliation possible in the most oppressed regions of the world.”
