May is Local History Month and to celebrate Jersey War Tunnels is offering free educational talks to school and community groups.
Local History Month is organised by The Historical Association in the UK and began life as Local History Week. Ever since, the event has gone from strength to strength and continues to grow. Local History Month aims to increase awareness of history in a local setting and is a great way for groups to highlight local history, getting local people involved.
Activities take place across the UK and include trips, library exhibitions and local lectures. Last year over 250 organisations participated with events such as family history workshops in Nottingham, Manchester and Liverpool, online debates with www.headlinehistory.co.uk and fascinating lectures such as the talk by BBC’s Dr Nick Barrett on ‘Personal Heritage and the Media’ at the Museum for Garden History, London.
With an exciting temporary exhibit, a Renault CharB1 tank, which was stationed in Jersey during the Occupation, Jersey War Tunnels has a unique snapshot of local history to offer residents and visitors alike. The attraction can offer talks on the tank, the Occupation or small groups will be able to gain access to the extensive database and attend presentations in the museum’s Research Centre.
Paul Simmonds, chief executive, Jersey War Tunnels, commented:
“Local History Month is a great opportunity for islanders to find out more about local history and in particular, the German Occupation. We would like to invite any groups that are interested in the Occupation to call and arrange a session with our collections manager, Chris Addy. We also have a fascinating Research Centre at Jersey War Tunnels which local people know little about. We have in our collection over 5,000 documents and artifacts covering all aspects of the period and are regularly used as reference for many researchers visiting the island, we would therefore like to encourage more islanders to make use of this interesting and free resource.”
Local History Month runs from 1 May – 5 June 2008.
If you would like to book a talk or appointment for the Research Centre please call Jersey War Tunnels on 860808.
