14- Jul -2009 Local language students benefit from investment in new technology
Further to the success of the state of the art audio guides which launched earlier this year, Jersey War Tunnels has now unveiled German and French translations of the handheld guides. And to celebrate this launch, Jersey War Tunnels has invited language students from Highlands College to use the guides as a study aid.

The state of the art audio guide tour, which was launched in February to further engage the visitor into the dark years of the German Occupation, is now available in the two languages in order to cater for the visiting European market.

The guides which were designed by the world’s leading producer of interpretative audio tours, Antenna Audio, have also been translated by the same company. The company is responsible for the audio systems at the Imperial War Museum, Kensington Palace, the London Eye, and the Vatican Museums, many of which also have guides available in multiple languages.

Chief Executive of Jersey War Tunnels, Paul Simmonds, said:
‘The English audio guides have exceeded all our expectations and as a consequence we have now launched our French and German versions, in order to cater for the growing number of European visitors to our site, greatly due to the increase in air traffic into Jersey. We are excited to offer this service to Highlands language students and very much look forward to receiving their feedback.'

Professor Ed Sallis, Principal of Highlands College, added:
‘I am delighted that our students have been given the opportunity to use the audio guides free of charge. They will be a very useful study aid which will help them to improve their interpretation skills. We are enormous supporters of Jersey’s heritage and the Jersey War Tunnels do a superb job in the educational field and this is an initiative we support.’

The key feature of the handheld audio devises are the interactive buttons that allow users to make a series of ethical judgments as they walk around. Visitors at Jersey War Tunnels will be asked to put themselves in the shoes of those Occupied and make a number of life changing decisions such as: ‘Would you stay or would you leave? If your family was starving, would you tell on your neighbour for extra rations?’

Students from Highlands College will be at Jersey War Tunnels trialling the guides on Friday 17th July 2009 from 10am.
