25- Apr -2005 Towards Tomorrow a new exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of liberation
Jersey War Tunnels has chosen to mark the Islands 60th anniversary of liberation from German rule with a poignant exhibition based upon making Occupation history accessible and pertinent to contemporary audiences.

Towards Tomorrow considers the cumulative effect of the Occupation experience from the perspectives of local residents, evacuees, deportees, servicemen and German prisoners of war. The exhibition uses subtitled audio-visual testimony in combination with tactile sculptural elements, original artwork and literary quotations.

Drawing broad connections with contemporary conflicts, the exhibition provides insights into the physical and psychological ramifications of military occupation.

A section within the display has been designated as temporary, with the intention of encouraging ongoing involvement from the Island community.

Collections Manager, Chris Addy stated: "The significance of this anniversary year has encouraged us to think deeply about the manner in which we could best mark it. This exhibition is rooted in the historical experience of the Occupation, but hopes to encourage the viewer to consider the notions of oppression and liberty as prominent issues in contemporary experience."

Wayne Audrain is the artist/designer behind 'Towards Tomorrow'.

He added: "For an artist this project has presented great opportunity to work on a subject that carries such a weight of emotional resonance. My aim in the making of this work is to visually articulate meaning to the onlooker by engaging and opening a dialogue on a personal level."
